The SR-31/Wilson Pigott Bridge between North Fort Myers and Fort Myers Shores has reopened following a crash that left the bridge damaged and a van in the river.

The bridge was closed around 4:30 a.m. Thursday after a van crashed through the concrete barrier and landed in the Caloosahatchee River Wednesday evening. The Florida Department of Transportation said bridge inspectors inspected the bridge and made temporary repairs. Crews will return at a later date for permanent repairs.

The Florida Highway Patrol said a 26-year-old Lehigh Acres man was driving southbound on SR-31 when he swerved and struck a guardrail, crossed the road and struck a concrete bridge wall, breaking through it and landing in the river.

The driver, who has not been identified, fled the scene and was later found at a home.

He faces charges of careless driving, no driver’s license and leaving the scene of a crash involving property damage.

Troopers said the crash happened Wednesday evening at about 8:15 p.m.
