Times are tough. Millions of Americans and thousands of Southwest Floridians are still struggling to feed themselves and their families.

One small group is hoping to help you bear some of that burden.

It was very apparent in the beginning of the coronavirus how many people were going hungry. Lots of those same people still can’t feed their families months later.

More and more Americans are joining that group facing food insecurity as more people lose work or come to find their layoffs are permanent or fear their job could soon be on the chopping block.

Most of the news coming out on this is not good.

The CEO of Feeding America said recently this hunger crisis will be worse than that of the great depression. Close to 30 million Americans recently reported not having enough to eat.

All of this compounded by the fact that the U.S. Senate recessed without reaching a stimulus deal. Lots of people need that money.

Over the last several months, we’ve covered a number of mobile food pantry events, interviewing several local food bank leaders.

One thing that we found was that a good bit of the time, the people there in need of free food used to donate food themselves or were volunteers.

They never expected they would be in those long lines asking for food this time, instead of offering it.

We’ve certainly seen this nationwide pain locally. The pastor at Coral Ridge Baptist Church, his wife and his congregation have struggled seeing how many in our own community don’t have food.

Now, they hope is that a little bit of your money will go a long way in helping those families.

Saturday’s event is a “garage sale” with proceeds benefiting the Harry Chapin Food Bank. There will also be a silent auction to benefit the food bank as well.
Both run from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m.

The Coral Ridge Baptist Church is located at 1723 NE 6th Street in Cape Coral.
