Two lawsuits were filed Sunday against the Lani Kai Resort on Fort Myers Beach saying they could have done more to protect patrons. Both lawsuits seek damages exceeding $30,000.

After a recent shooting death, the plaintiffs were suggesting that Lani Kai should have had better security measures in place to prevent an event like this. One of the lawsuits was filed by the deceased’s family, the other by a woman who was shot and injured at the Lani Kai.

The lawsuit states that based on the violence that often occurs there, Lani Kai should have had more and better quality security measures. The lawsuit from the surviving victim outlines specific security issues that could have been solved, including inadequate lighting and failure to utilize video surveillance.

The surviving victim’s lawsuit also outlines that the security personnel the Lani Kai does have were improperly trained.

That particular shooting happened on July 15 of this year. WINK News found out there have been more than 550 calls to the Lani Kai on Fort Myers Beach pertaining to the police within the past year.
