Hendry County has received $5.7 million from the federal government as a result of the CARES Act, and residents and small businesses will be able to apply for funds beginning Monday.

Christian Galvez’s food truck business has been hit hard as a result of the pandemic. “I basically started this venture myself maybe a month before COVID hit and ever since then it’s just been a struggle,” said Galvez, owner of Munch.

This has made it hard for him to provide for his family.

“I have a little girl that I have to feed. She’s way more important than anyone else,” he added.

Other business owners have been struggling as well. Amanda McRoy, owner of Cracker Cookin’ and Caterin’, said her business has slowed down as well.

“We were doing quite a bit, and everybody’s staying home and everybody’s staying away,” McRoy said.

Luckily, help is on the way for business owners and families in Hendry County. Beginning Monday morning, you can apply for financial assistance via the Hendry Cares website.

People can get up to $5,000 through the individual assistance program. This is for households making between $15,000 and $93,773 in income annually.

The money can be used for things like utilities, mortgages, and leases.

Both Galvez and McRoy are considering applying for the funds.

“Any help that I can get would be awesome,” Galvez said.

“A hand up instead of a hand out is kind of how I think of things,” McRoy added.

Applications open at 9 a.m. Monday. Check the website to see the complete list of documents needed to apply. Applications will be reviewed on a first-come, first-serve basis.
