Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden announced phase two of his economic recovery plan Tuesday, and his campaign told WINK News they’re ramping up efforts to campaign in Southwest Florida.

President Donald Trump’s senior campaign advisor, Mercedes Schlapp, told WINK News on Wednesday that she feels good about Florida, that Biden is well behind here. Schlapp said Biden can buy all the TV commercials he wants but it won’t erase his record of failing to get things done.

The Trump campaign also responded Wednesday to the Biden camp’s comments about the president’s handling of the virus in terms of the tourism economy. Biden’s national press secretary, TJ Ducklo, told WINK News, “The president, Donald Trump’s lack of coherent plan to get the pandemic under control is what is fueling such hardship with the tourism industry.”

“Let’s be real. It was Joe Biden who did not agree with President Trump’s decisive action to put in place travel restrictions to China. Joe Biden called it xenophobic. We know for a fact those travel restrictions taken early on, that decision by President Trump, helped save lives,” Schlapp said.

She also responded to the part of Biden’s economic recovery plan that focuses on clean energy jobs and infrastructure jobs.

“His clean energy idea would cost trillions of dollars. I mean, some estimates have it at $7 trillion. We also know that it would create tremendous job loss in the energy industry trying to eliminate fossil fuels by 2035.”

In other news, Wednesday is the third day in the last six that Florida saw triple digits in COVID-19 deaths.

What does Trump’s campaign want to say to Floridians to help ease their concerns?

“Look, if people have symptoms or people are concerned, go get your test. I mean, I think that you know we have to follow the health experts,” Schlapp said.

Also on Wednesday, the Republican governor of Alabama mandated masks, joining the Republican governor of Texas. WINK News asked Schlapp if Trump is talking to Gov. Ron DeSantis about a mask mandate. She said these conversations are always going on but it’s best to leave decisions like that up to local and state leaders.
