Florida continues to shatter case records during the coronavirus pandemic. More than 15,000 cases were reported over the weekend. That’s the highest number of new cases in a single day by any state since the pandemic began. And there were more than 12,000 cases reported in Florida to start the week.

We wanted to know if people in Southwest Florida are changing their habits again Monday, as spikes in COVID-19 cases continue in the state.

“Oh, I think everybody is worried,” said Scott Grant in Lehigh Acres. “I’m too young to die. I want to live.”

Newlywed couple Brett and Kaity Tiger decided to fly to Florida despite the spike. They were married this past Sunday and continued with their Florida honeymoon plans.

“My brother sent me a headline about the case breaking the record, and I was like, ‘Well, we’re still planning to go,’” Kaity said.

On Facebook, we asked if the rise in cases has changed what people are doing on a daily basis. That could have been cooking from home more, leaving Florida or, if seasonal, not planning to come back and even staying away from friends and family.

“I’m gonna roll the dice eventually and go,” Grant said. “I miss my grandson. I got to get home.”

But many others said they’re not doing anything differently. Others told us, if anything, it’s only for others. Because they said they think testing is playing a big role in the increase.

“I bought the kids masks to protect them but, me personally, no,” said Ronald Duke in Cape Coral. “I’m just living a normal, everyday life.”

“With deaths, it worries me because I have a mom at home,” said Michael Garret in Fort Myers. “But, at the same time, it doesn’t worry me. If I get it, I get it. At the same time, I’m keeping up precautions. I’m staying six feet away. I wash my hands.”

We want to know if the rising case numbers have changed anything for you. You can still comment on our WINK News Facebook post.
