Lee County Commission Chairman Brian Hamman said Wednesday he has tested positive for COVID-19.

He posted a video message on Facebook, saying “About six days ago, I lost my sense of taste and smell, and immediately we isolated ourselves and we made an appointment to get tested. Yesterday I got the results that confirmed I do have COVID-19.”

Hamman didn’t want to speak with WINK News on Wednesday, only saying that his Facebook post speaks for itself.

In his video, he said the Florida Department of Health “has already started the contact tracing to let everybody know.”

He’s using his test result to send a message.

“Let it be a warning to you. Anyone can catch this, and anyone can spread this. I am asking everyone to please do your part. Create your own personal mask mandate.”

Hamman said he isn’t doing interviews, but WINK News reporter Morgan Rynor spoke with him on the phone Monday while trying to find out whether the county would be taking any actions on the coronavirus crisis.

“Lee County has been trying to lead by example; we wear masks in public, we have put up signs in our facilities to ask people to wear them,” Hamman said Monday.

He also said then that he wouldn’t call an emergency meeting to discuss any possible county response to the spike in cases. That doesn’t sit well with Julie Lehotay, who sent emails to county leaders.

“I’ve just been reaching out to our city manager, I’ve reached out to my county commissioner just asking, you know, do you plan on meeting?”

Lehotay said she does her research before leaving her home, like learning which stores in Lee County follow CDC guidelines.

“I feel comfortable going in and then you realize they’re not really following the guidelines that their company or store posted and that makes me feel uncomfortable,” she said.

Lehotay said she spoke to the assistant of her commissioner, Cecil Pendergrass, but he hasn’t called her back.

For the fifth business day in a row, County Manager Roger Desjarlais didn’t return our reporter’s calls.

Hamman is the second leader in Lee County to announce a positive COVID-19 test result. Fort Myers City Councilman Kevin Anderson tested positive in March after taking a cruise.

The Fort Myers City Council said Tuesday they will hold a special meeting Thursday to discuss whether to issue a mask mandate for the city.

Lee County leaders have not held any public meetings on the issue. Trust WINK News to continue to press them for answers.

Hamman did say his COVID-19 symptoms are mild, that his kids are fine and his family will quarantine until they’re healed. If the county does decide to have some sort of meeting, Hamman could participate virtually.
