Human remains found by police Wednesday morning are believed to be those of a missing North Port woman, according to the North Port Police Department.

Around 9 a.m., the Peace River K9 Search and Rescue team discovered the remains in an area where they were searching for 58-year-old Theresa Anne Williams.

Wiliams was reported missing on May 3. The caller said she had not been seen or heard from in a few days and that she’d left her residence at Willow Creek Apartments, never telling anyone in her family her destination. The family said they were concerned for her safety due to a diagnosed mental illness.

The remains were located in a wooded lot just west of the apartment complex where Williams resided. Nearby, some of her belongings were found.

NPPD believes the remains belong to Williams, but the Medical Examiner’s office is working to confirm. They say there is no indication as to how the remains got there or if it was more than an accident. There are no signs of foul play at this time.
