Contact tracing is one of the ways we’re fighting the spread of the coronavirus, but now, the Federal Trade Commission is warning that scammers are using it as bait to try and steal your money.

Contact tracing is a way to keep track of people who have been exposed to someone with COVID-19 and need to quarantine. The government usually hires contact tracers who will reach out to you via text message, but only to tell you that you’ll get a phone call from a specific phone number.

The scam texts, however, are trying to trick people into clicking a link, where you’ll be asked for things like your social security number or bank account information.

To help stop the spread of COVID-19 scams, be sure to let your loved ones know that these fake texts are out there.
