Paying you back for over-paying—the Attorney General’s office issued nearly $350,000 in refunds after many were overcharged for essential, high-demand products during the pandemic.

New numbers show Florida’s price gouging hotline was contacted 4,200 times since the state declared a state emergency in mid-March.

Attorney general Ashley Moody’s office issued 70 subpoenas for price gouging on high-demand goods—like masks, cleaning supplies, PPE, and COVID-19 test kits.

“People that are going to use this crisis to profit while other people are just trying to protect themselves and their families, they need to be put on notice that we haven’t stopped working. We’ll come for them,” said Moody.

Anyone who violates Florida’s price gouging law faces the penalty of $1,000 per violation and up to $25,000 per day.
