Pedestrian using ride-on equipment killed in Glades County crash

A 54-year-old Zephyrhills man has died after he was hit by an SUV while operating ride-on equipment, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

Around 12:45 p.m. on Monday, May 4, the SUV, driven by a 21-year-old Okeechobee man, was headed southbound on SR-78.

The pedestrian was working construction and using the ride-on equipment to heat and apply roadway reflectors and was partially in the southbound lane of SR-78.

The SUV struck the pedestrian on the ride-on equipment, then struck the east guardrail and came to rest in the paved apron of SR-78.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead on scene. The driver of the SUV was uninjured.

This crash remains under investigation.
