Mabel Spengler in Cape Coral turned 100 years old Friday, and her family made sure her milestone birthday did not go unnoticed during the pandemic.

“When I think back of the years that I’ve been through, it’s just unbelievable,” Spengler said. “And I’m so happy to have my family.”

Spengler’s family planned a big birthday bash, but the coronavirus caused those plans to change, so they threw her a properly, social-distanced, surprise celebration.

Since Spengler couldn’t invite anyone inside her home, neighbors, friends and the local fire department had the party outside and celebrated from their cars with a drive-by parade.

It’s unlike anything Spengler had experienced before.

“Happy to be alive and feeling good,” Spengler said.

And the best thing to keep her spirits up?

“Live another 100 year maybe,” Spengler told us.
