In a matter of days, COVID-19 testing is going to expand in Southwest Florida as part of the governor’s plan to reopen the state.

Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Wednesday that a state-run drive-thru testing site will open at CenturyLink Sports Complex in south Fort Myers, and a walk-up site will open Sunday in Immokalee.

The National Guard will be at both.

The sites will be able to test up to 750 people a day, and not only will the tests be free, you won’t be required to have a note from your doctor to get tested.

“It may look like we’re having an increased number of cases, when in fact, the same number of cases may have already been present. They just may not have been documented,” said Robert Hawkes, director of Florida Gulf Coast University’s physician assistant program.

Hawkes said the expanded testing is necessary as businesses begin to reopen.

“To prepare us in the coming months if we do get a second spike, we’ll be able to have the testing processes already underway,” he said.

The state, along with the National Guard, has been already been operating drive-thru testing sites in other locations, but DeSantis recognizes that not everyone has access to transportation.

We want to be able to spot trends in some of the under-served communities because, one, you can maybe isolate that, but then two, obviously be able to have the appropriate medical care,” the governor said.

So the National Guard will also host a walk-up testing site in Immokalee, starting Sunday.

“Information is being put out into the community, not only in English, Spanish, and Creole, but also in the Guatemalan Mayan dialect. So that information is being pushed out there. We’re looking forward to a great turnout,” said Kristine Hollingsworth with the Florida Department of Health in Collier County.

Information on when the south Fort Myers site will open has not been released, but the governor said it will be early next week.

The free tests will be given in Immokalee at 419 N. First St., from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, May 3, through Tuesday, May 5. Translators will be on hand, and those getting tested will only need to give a name, address and phone number. No social security card or number is required.
