A former deputy with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office has been charged with manslaughter in the death of his son.

Sergio Perez turned himself in at the Lee County Jail on Wednesday. He was later released on $75,000 bond.

Perez was off duty on Aug. 13, 2019, when he stopped by his elderly mother’s home in Cape Coral. An argument with his son, Ramon Perez, ensued, and by the time police arrived, Perez was unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The State Attorney’s Office said Sergio Perez was fired from LCSO on Wednesday.

A previously filed civil suit over the son’s estate alleges Ramon Perez had been drinking, and at one point, punched his father in the head.

Sergio Perez apparently told his mother to call police but his mother was instead pushed to the ground by Ramon, and she suffered a broken hip and brain bleed. The altercation then led to Ramon’s death.

Ramon’s mother, Yadira Peña, was very emotional Wednesday after hearing of her ex-husband’s arrest and said she considers it to be justice for the death of her only son.

“We’re very happy… my family and I are very happy to have received this huge announcement that Sergio Perez was charged on this day with the death of my son, Ramon. We will wait…. we will wait for justice.”

WINK News is reaching out to the attorney representing Sergio Perez. He is due back in court on Monday.
