Why so hazy in Florida? The burning answer is hundreds of miles away

Published:

If you’ve gone outside for fresh air recently, you may have noticed a lot of haze and even some smoke in the air. The main source, believe it or not, extends from Cuba all the way to Central America.

Fires have been burning in those locations for days and a persistent south wind has been spreading smoke aloft northward across Florida. That southerly wind is also why we’ve been so unseasonably hot and humid too.

We’ll see a temporary improvement on Friday. However, more hazy weather is possible into the weekend as wind shifts back from the southwest.
