Detectives have arrested a man for the murder of an adult education student at Lely High School Thursday night.

According to Collier County Sheriff’s Office, Jose Alfredo Avila Pena, 50, of Naples, face a charge for Second-Degree Murder. Investigators determined that Pena and the victim had previously been in a domestic relationship.

The shooting happened during night school out in the parking area.

We learned from the school district that this was an act of domestic violence. They tell us it happened around 8:30 p.m. outside the school campus while the victim was attending night classes.

Video shows deputies searching around the campus throughout the night.

While all of this took place, parents and faculty at Lely High School and nearby Parkside Elementary received messages from their principals.

“We felt like it was critical that the parents and the faculty hear it from the principal’s first. This is the reality of this tragic situation, a case of domestic violence involving an adult education student,” said Chad Oliver, the public information officer for Collier County Public Schools.

School resumed as regularly scheduled Friday with an extra deputy presence throughout the day.
