A video shared with us by viewers is starting to go viral in Southwest Florida. A local high school student was arrested after she was caught smoking in a classroom.

A recording shows a student lighting up and smoking in a classroom at Dunbar High School Thursday. The student in the video was arrested for a probation violation, and the school district says she could be expelled.

“I’m shocked because the policies at this school have been very good, excellent,” said Joel Leal, whose daughter attends DHS. “But kids always find a way on how to cheat the system.”

The School District of Lee County spent months educating parents through online webinars.

“We hope our presentation tonight can explain what makes tobacco and vaping so dangerous for your teenagers,” said Rob Spicker, the assistant director for the District’s media relations and public information.

The webinar took place Wednesday night, and the recording of the student smoking was taken the next day.

Leal says it’s time to do a better job of communicating this information to kids at home.

“We talk about any kind of drugs and vaping is one of the things that we don’t tolerate at home,” Leal said.

According to the District, “School administrators quickly responded to this situation. The student was arrested for a probation violation and faces a school disciplinary hearing that could lead to expulsion.”

It remains unconfirmed what the girl in the recording was seen smoking. It’s also unclear when she will face disciplinary action from the school.

“It’s a constant battle,” Leal said … It can be won.”
