The road from mile marker 100 to 102 will be dedicated Dec. 6 in his memory.

Gibbons was a member of the 68th FHP recruit class, having graduated in June 1983. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and honorably served the residents of Collier County.

On March 23, 1985, Gibbons was killed in the line of duty when his patrol vehicle crashed during an attempted traffic stop on I-75. He was just 38 years old.

“Trooper Gibbons bravely served his country in Vietnam as a member of the United States Air Force and he served the residents of our state with great honor as a Florida Highway Patrol Trooper,” said Colonel Gene Spaulding, Director of the Florida Highway Patrol. “His service and dedication will forever be remembered.”

The dedication ceremony will be held on Friday, Dec. 6 at 10 a.m. at the Fort Myers FHP office located at 10041 Daniels Parkway, Fort Myers, FL, 33913.
