A child died after being hit by a car in Fort Myers on Tuesday evening.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, 5-year-old Samantha Martinez was playing in a driveway at the 1600 block of Cypress Dr. between 8th Avenue and 9th Avenue around 7:10 p.m.

According to investigators, a person driving a Jeep hit Martinez as it pulled into the driveway.

Martinez was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital. Soon afterward, she was pronounced dead.

Investigators told WINK News that the man driving the Jeep and the victim do not appear to be related.

“Our hearts go out to the family, you know, this is a child,” said Lt. Greg Bueno, with Florida Highway Patrol. “So we’re going to determine exactly what happened. And that’s going to take a little bit of time.

“But the one thing that we know,” Lt. Bueno added, “is a little girl is no longer here and that’s tragic.”
