A giant smoke cloud that appears to be taking over parts of Southwest Florida is being produced by a prescribed burn.

The Forestry Commission has confirmed that they are conducting the prescribed burn at the Bob Janes Preserve in Alva.

Sean Allen from Florida Forest Service said the burn is part of Conservation 2020 and they are just assisting.

The burn has been completed at 1,106 acres.

Allen says the wind pushed the smoke from the burn into North Fort Myers and will continue pushing it toward the Gulf.

He says the smoke is beginning to clear up and should not be an issue later Wednesday night.

Several people have reported seeing the smoke and even resulting ash.
