Fort Myers tackling blighted homes

Blighted properties are lowering your home’s value and now the city of Fort Myers is on a mission to fix the problem.

Monday, the city will change how it funds a program that’s demolishing unsafe homes. This will allow the city to reduce its debt. The city has an interactive map showing the timeline and number of homes declared unsafe.

Since the city began the project two years ago, 63 homes have been torn down. City leaders say the blighted homes cause property values to fall and increase crime by at least 25 percent in the neighborhood.
