Cape Coral woman arrested for murder of Marine Corps veteran

Authorities arrested a Cape Coral woman in the 1997 murder of a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who was killed at a Fort Myers motel.

The suspect, Michelle Ashley, 42, faces one count of First-Degree Murder with a Firearm charge. Ashley will appear before a judge for the first time on Wednesday.

The victim, Keith Jones, 27, was shot to death on June 19, 1997, at the former Tides Motel, which was in downtown Fort Myers. Jones was a veteran of the Marine Corps and a recent graduate of the Law Enforcement Academy.

The State Attorney’s Office 20th Judicial Circuit and the Fort Myers Police Dept. made the announcement Tuesday around 7 p.m. “Today is a long time coming and I hope this indictment brings some comfort to the family of Keith Jones,” said Amira Fox, the state attorney.
