Construction on Downtown Fort Myers extension expected to begin next week

The final permits are approved for a new development in Downtown Fort Myers that will feature a hotel, shops and apartments.

Construction for this project is expected to start on the “West End at City Walk” next week in the place of the overgrown parking lot off McGregor, right next to the Downtown Publix Plaza.

People who spoke to WINK News say it’s been a long time coming.

“Five years ago I was looking at it and I knew if that was developed that would be pretty significant, but that was five years ago and everybody’s been waiting,” said a neighbor who lives nearby.

The first phase is the apartment complex; it will include more than 300 units and a parking garage.

One neighbor whose building overlooks the empty lot says he is happy to see something is finally getting done.

“The property hasn’t been developed for so long, it’s kind of been an eye sore, so it’s wonderful they’re gonna bring in some nice retail, some residential; it’s really gonna add to the area. It’s gonna be beautiful,” Patrick Pinner said.

The plan also includes a hotel and room for retail, but developers say at this point who will go in that space and when is still up in the air.
