An East coast man led deputies from two separate counties on a chase Tuesday after the suspect stole a boat from a person’s home.

One neighbor in Lehigh Acres said thieves break into cars all the time. He requested anonymity because he does not want to be their next target.

“We’ve had activity where they have stolen things and broken into cars,” he said, “but never an actual vehicle.”

However, the neighbor did not think someone would try to steal a boat out of the owner’s backyard. Breitel Bejerano, who is from Florida’s east coast, may have gotten away if the owner’s son had not caught the suspect driving the family’s boat down State Road 82.

The son called Lee County Sheriff’s Office and followed the thief into Collier County. Deputies stopped the suspect near the intersection of SR-82 and SR-29. Somehow, the thief unhitched the boat and shots were fired.

There were no injuries from the shots, but a chase unfolded. That chase ended in front of a Wendy’s off SR-29. Deputies from LCSO and Collier County Sheriff’s Office surrounded the fast-food restaurant.

Soon after, authorities captured Bejerano. Among the charges the suspect faces are Flee Police with Disregard Safety to Persons or Property, GTA 3rd Degree and Hit and Run Leave Scene of Crash Involve Damage to Property. Investigators are worried crime from the East coast of Florida is creeping over here.

Misty Gonzales, who lives in Immokalee, said the whole incident freaked her out.

“We don’t want that kind of trouble around here,” Gonzales said. “We just want to kind of stay the nice quiet community and continue on with our lives.”
