Despite the latest projections having Hurricane Dorian moving east, people on the east coast of Florida are not letting their guard down.

As Dorian inches closer to the east coast, parking lots, such as one at the Home Depot in North Palm Beach, are still packed with customers. Around 20 minutes away on Singer Island, shops in the usually busy beach town are boarding up.

Stephan Takacs is seen with a power tool, drilling a large wooden plank on the entrance of his business, Casa Farneti.

“Hopefully,” Takacs said, “this will actually work.”

The track, which has Dorian moving northeastern in the Atlantic Ocean rather than inland on the Florida coast, has some people breathing a sigh of relief. But they know they are not in the clear, leaving the anxiety high to see what will happen next.

Among those people are Alberto and Kimberly Goncalves, whose sign in front of their business, Sign Shop & More, says exactly what they are thinking.

“I’ve never seen anything like these,” Kimberly said. “The noise is crazy. The lightning strikes are awful and I have a 9-year-old that loses his mind. Now, these things are scary.”

The couple lives above their print shop on Singer Island and worries the impact of the hurricane could leave them stranded.

“Here’s the thing,” Kimberly said. “It’ll put us out of business.”
