Glades County encourages voluntary evacuations, shelters open

Officials with Glades County Public Safety are encouraging residents to voluntarily evacuate.

The voluntary evacuations began at 5 p.m. Friday for any low-lying areas, mobile homes and RV parks for the following communities:

  • Moore Haven
  • Palmdale
  • Lake Port
  • Washington Park
  • Buckhead Ridge
  • Uncle Joe’s Fish Camp

A special needs shelter is opening Sunday at 1 p.m. at West Glades Elementary located at 2586 State Hwy 731, LaBelle, FL 33935.

The general population shelter is opening Sunday at 6 p.m., also at West Glades Elementary.

TRANSPORTATION PICKUP TIMES:

  • Buckhead Ridge Homeowners Building 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. (682 SR-78, Okeechobee, FL)
  • Lakeport Maple Grove 10:45 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. (12777 E SR-78, Moore Haven, FL)
  • Washington Park Homeowners Building 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. (1182 Gamble Street, Moore Haven, FL)
  • Moore Haven Doyle Conner Building 10:45 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. (900 U.S. 27,Moore Haven, FL)

If you do plan to come to a shelter, bring bedding, hygiene products, water, medications, non-perishable foods and any dietary food items for a minimum of three days.

The United Way helpline is open and taking calls at this time, please dial 211.

GCPS also says sandbags are still available at the Emergency Operations Center located at 1097 Health Park Drive MH. They are pre-bagged and ready to be loaded.
