Would you willingly give Deputies permission to pull you over? The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office wants you to do it so it can make sure the right person is behind the wheel. All CCSO will need is to see a sticker on your car window.

Brian McEvety, the general manager of Murdock Stones, said the Combat Auto Theft Program (CAT) is a “no brainer” to him.

Since January, Charlotte County has had 14 truck thefts. Claudette Bennette, with CCSO, said that is too many. But the new stickers may change that.

“When a car is registered in a CAT program and a vehicle is being driven between the hours of 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. and it has one of our decals place on the back,” Bennette said, “that gives a deputy the right to do an investigative stop.”

Those hours are for personal cars. Business vehicles are between the hours of 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. To get a sticker, contact the Crime Prevention Unit through CCSO. It advises bringing registration information, driver’s license and other relevant documents for the free decal.

Jim Evans, for instance, looks forward to the program rolling into Charlotte County. He knows what it feels like to be a victim. Having his car stolen was a terrible experience that he would not wish upon another person.

“A little bit of prevention goes a long way,” Evans said. “It makes that person think twice.”
