Florida Highway Patrol has named the victim of a multi-car crash that closed roads for hours in North Fort Myers Saturday.

According to FHP, Carolyn Erwin, 72, was killed in the crash involving five vehicles on NE Pine Island Road.

All five vehicles were traveling westbound on the roadway approaching the intersection with Barrett Road.

Erwin’s 2010 Kia Sportage was in the middle of the pack. Due to congestion westbound, four vehicles, including Erwin’s Kia, came to a slowed stop. The report says the driver of a fifth vehicle farthest west behind the others failed to do so and hit the back of the closest vehicle in the pack causing a series of crashes with the other three.

Erwin’s vehicle was caught in the chain reaction and came to rest in the northern grassy shoulder of the road. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Charges are pending, and the crash remains under investigation.
