Attacks increase demand for bulletproof backpacks

Families are back to school shopping and stores like Walmart, Sears, and Office Max and Office Depot are offering customers the option of going bulletproof.

More big box stores are carrying bulletproof backpacks and last year WINK News put a Guard Dog Security backpack and a Bullet Blocker backpack insert to the test with Shoot Center Owner and Operator, Aaron Forum.

Both the backpack and the insert protected against what they said they would.

But when Forum used a semi-automatic sporting rifle, something the items do not protect against, the bullets went through.

Guard Dog Security tells us they started making the backpacks in 2013. President Yasir Sheikh says while the demand for them went up last year, sales are consistent.

“It’s no longer about responding to any sort of incident or tragedy. What were seeing is that safety is on the mind of parents. So they’re taking a proactive decision and they’re saying safety is part of the back to school procedure this year,” Sheikh said.
