Cape Coral man arrested for drunkenly shooting his dog

A man was arrested in Cape Coral after he drunkenly shot his dog outside of his home, according to Cape Coral police.

According to CCPD, on Monday officers were called in reference to gun shots heard in a Cape neighborhood. While responding officers were told a man was screaming a woman’s name a the scene.

After officers blocked off the area and searched around the house they found a large, light brown mixed breed dog that appeared to be dead in the vacant lot next to the house where the shots came from.

While Korey James Potts, 23, exited the home, he was crying and said that he shot his dog, Gordo. Officers could smell the odor of alcohol coming from his breath. Potts admitted to drinking earlier.

Potts’ roommate saw him in the yard with a handgun. She took the gun and threw it into the vacant lot and brought Potts inside the house. Witnesses also reported seeing Potts’ dog running around the house outside before hearing gunshots and seeing Potts lying near the dog in the vacant lot.

Based on the investigation, Potts was charged with the Aggravated Animal Cruelty, Discharging a Firearm in a Public of Residential Property and Using a Firearm While Under the Influence of an Alcoholic Beverage.
