Police say a motorcyclist fled from an attempted traffic stop and right into a parking lot where other officers were parked.

At 6:40 p.m. Thursday, a Cape Coral police officer attempted to stop Austin Wong, 23, at the 700 block of NE Pine Island Road for passing cars on the right-hand shoulder of the road, and at one point traveling 85 mph in a 55 mph zone.

When the officer pulled up behind Wong they say he sped off and again went onto the shoulder.

Near the intersection of SW Pine Island Road and Nicholas Parkway, the officer backed off.

Wong then turned into a Walmart parking lot, not knowing that another officer saw him pulling in, and yet another was working a retail theft in the same plaza.

The officer approached the suspect and detained him, police say, adding Wong was found to have a stolen handgun in his waistband and operating the unregistered motorcycle with a suspended license.

Wong was charged with fleeing and eluding an officer, and carrying a concealed weapon without a permit.

CCPD property detectives also interviewed Wong in regards to the handgun’s status as stolen. Wong was transported to the Lee County Jail.
