A severely decomposed body has been found in a St. Petersburg, Florida lake, surrounded by alligators.

St. Pete police spokeswoman Yolanda Frenandez tells the Tampa Bay Times the body found Thursday morning on Lake Maggiore was so badly decomposed they couldn’t determine race or gender.

The newspaper reports that Otis Crawford and Patricia Kays spotted the body around 8 a.m. Thursday. Crawford says they were eating breakfast in their car when they saw alligators dragging the remains in the water. They told a nearby city worker, who notified police.

St. Petersburg Fire Rescue crews removed the body.

No additional details were available.
