Florida Gov. DeSantis signs bill repealing blind trust law

Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill repealing a law that let elected officials place their assets in a blind trust to avoid revealing if their investments created a conflict of interest.

DeSantis signed the bill Tuesday, repealing the law that allowed his predecessor, current Republican U.S. Sen. Rick Scott, to claim he didn’t know how his assets were invested.

Scott put his assets in a blind trust shortly after taking office as governor in 2011. The Legislature passed a bill authorizing blind trusts two years later. The idea was that Scott wouldn’t have any idea how his assets were invested, and therefore could claim he didn’t know if he’d financially benefit from his actions as governor.

But critics have said it’s unlikely Scott wasn’t aware of his investments.

Scott is worth $232 million.
