It does not matter what time of the day it is because when it is 5 p.m., there is bumper-to-bumper rush hour traffic.

David Noack is bound to catch drivers making illegal U-turns on Sommerset Dr.

“The light is long,” Noack said. “Everybody’s in a hurry. They always got to go, go, go.”

Noack admits he has ignored the no U-turn sign to avoid the long light cycles on Colonial Blvd.

When we first reported on the problem, we counted more than 100 cars making the illegal U-turn in an hour. Soon after, the Fort Myers Police Dept. place a new flashing electronic sign at the intersection.

Recently, FMPD added a new message after drivers started cutting through the Walgreens parking lot.

“They will all instead of turning just come straight through and come right in here and cut their Walgreens and go out the back or spin around,” Noack said.

Noack said if officers give drivers with the $163 fine, these motorists may think twice about breaking the law. Along with that fine, drivers will have three points added to their license for making an illegal U-turn along Sommerset.

FMPD has issued two traffic tickets for making an illegal U-turn since the sign has gone up. Both of these citations were issued last Thursday.

Noack said if the city wants to address the increase in traffic, it should invest more in concrete solution.

“You know what they need to do is put overpasses in,” Noack said. “It’s expensive, but traffic is just getting worse every day.”
