Cyclist, 86, dies after being hit by an SUV

Florida Highway Patrol confirmed an 86-year-old Punta Gorda man died from injuries Saturday after being hit by an SUV while cycling on Friday.

The crash happened at the intersection of Piper Road and Woodlawn Drive in Charlotte County.

According to the FHP press release, the driver of a Ford Escape and the victim were both traveling northbound on Piper Rd. The Ford was in the outside lane close to the driveway along the roadway where the cyclist was biking. The Ford hit the 86-year-old cyclist, and the bike and the man rolled up onto the windshield.

The victim was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital to treat critical injuries and died the next day. His name has not been re;leased, pending notification of his family.

The driver of the Ford was taken to Bayfront hospital for minor injuries and faces a charge for Failure To Maintain Single Lane.
