Deputies arrested a homeless man after he tried to break into a house while the homeowner was there and was found pooping outside a nearby home in possession of illegal drugs.

On Thursday, Collier County Sheriff’s Office arrested Michael James Burke, 44, on multiple drug charges after he tried to break into homes in East Naples .

CCSO responded to the 3100 block of Barrett Avenue after a homeowner reported an attempted burglary at their home. The homeowner said two men, one identified as Burke, tried to get into their home by ripping open the screen door at the front of the house, causing damage to it. The homeowner went to get his firearm and shouted at the two suspects that he had a gun.

According to the CCSO arrest report, this caused Burke to leave and go to a neighbor’s home. CCSO arrived at the scene, and one of the responding deputies found Burke defecating behind the shed in the back of a neighbor’s home. Burke was placed under arrest, and he told the deputy he understood his rights and would speak to CCSO without a lawyer.

According to CCSO, Burke appeared to be under the influence of drugs and was speaking with slurred speech. The deputy found BurKe had a prescription bottle with his name on it and found half a green pill that did not match the name of the drug on the label. That pill was found to be a schedule 4 drug. Also in the pill bottle was a plastic bag with four crystal rocks that tested positive for cocaine.

Burke faces charges for Possession Of Cocaine, Possession Of A Controlled Substance, Loitering Or Prowling, Disorderly Conduct and Criminal Mischief.

CCSO also found Burke had multiple felony arrests in New Jersey, but deputies have not confirmed if he was convicted for any of the charges.

According to the report, the homeowner present when Burke and another suspect attempted to break into their home wants to press charges for damages cause.

A recording on the homeowner’s Ring doorbell application showed Burke pull the screen door open and attempt to open the front door of the house.

No other suspects were found by responding deputies.

Burke is in Naples Jail with a $15,000 bond.
