Fort Myers Police sent out a press release warning citizens of scammers pretending to be from the Fort Myers Police Department, and are asking for donations from unsuspecting callers.

FMPD says a citizen recently called to report he received a call from somebody pretending to be police and asked for $175 for the department. The caller said the telephone scam was using the department’s name and spoofing the main switchboard number. FMPD says the telephone number being used is a spoof and did not originate from the department.

As the man asked for more information, the caller became aggressive before hanging up the phone.

The Fort Myers Police Department is not soliciting donations over the telephone and if anyone receives a call requesting a donation please contact the department at (239) 321-7700.
