A man, who has not been identified by Cape Coral police, drowned in a canal along SE 30th Terrace east of Del Prado Boulevard in Cape Coral Monday.

“It was just before 11 o’clock,” Jessie Billets said. “My mom came in to get me, and she was hearing some noises across the canal.”

Billets said she heard a man gasping for air.

“Couldn’t really understand what he was saying,” Billets said. “And I had her come back in to get my husband, and he came out, and at that point, we didn’t hear anything at all.”

Billets said law enforcement responded shortly afterward.

“The fire trucks came,” Billets said. “I’m sure there were ambulances and what not over there. I saw the diver go in and bring him up onto the doc.”

It is believed the man went into the water to rescue his dog.

“I overheard the one police officer say the dog was wet,” Billets said. “And it had happened in the past that the dog fell in the canal, so we think that he probably went in after the dog.”
