The star of the Netflix show, “Last Chance U,” gave South Fort Myers High School teachers an inspiring lesson in motivation.

“We need to really invest in and take an interest in our young people and I think that it starts in education,” said Brittany Wagner.

Wagner, former academic advisor, rose to fame when she appeared on Netflix’s “Last Chance U,” a docuseries about college athletes struggling to stay on the right track, and facing their last chance to make it to the National Football League.

Her famous line, “Do you have a pencil?” is what propelled her to follow her dream, founding her company, 10 Thousand Pencils.

“I’ve just been given this national platform to really go out and just impact schools and students, and teachers and councilors all over the country,” Wagner said.

Now, Wagner’s taking her talents to Southwest Florida by talking to teachers about looking past labels.

“In society today, every child is definitely unique,” Wagner said. “Every family is unique and we need to honor that uniqueness.”

Virginia Harper teaches a reading class at South Fort Myers High School. For some of her students, it’s their last chance at graduating.

“I have had athletes and they know that this reading class is one of their last chances, they’re seniors,” Harper said. “They are our in May so they are really taking it seriously and they’re really trying.”

Overall, Wagner is grateful to walk in her purpose and inspire others to keep moving.

“Honestly, I’m here to inspire teachers but at the end of the day, it inspires me to meet people and hear stories,” Wagner said. “It gives me more of a passion to continue to do the work.”

Wagner will be speaking with student athletes at South Fort Myers High School tomorrow.
