Saturday update on local and statewide sports

For Saturday local and statewide sports, we first take a look at top plays from local high school playoffs.

Onto college football, The FSU versus UF football game provided some classic in-state rivalry for sports fans. The Gators scored the points they needed in a 41-14 win over the Seminoles. The win earned the Gator’s a spot in one of the six 2019 bowl games, while the Seminoles miss out on the action.

More in college football, Miami went up against Pittsburgh as an unranked team. Upset alert: The Canes stormed ahead early with a 14-point lead against the Panthers to eventually get a blowout win 24-3. This gives Miami positioning for a better bowl game, which they will find out about on Dec. 2.

No. 9 ranked UCF beat USF, 38-10, Friday. The Knights did suffer a loss though when starting QB McKenzie Milton had to be carted off the field after a serious leg injury. Milton underwent successful surgery on his right knee Saturday and is recovering at Tampa Genral Hospital.

FGCU women’s basketball look forward to a milestone for head coach Karl Smesko, who is one game away from 500 career wins with the Eagles. Smesko grabbed win 499 Saturday with an Eagles win in an away game over Hawaii, 76-67. Smekso could grab win 500 as early as tomorrow night against American at 5 p.m.

In hockey, the Everblades went on the road to play the Norfolk Admirals. The game was tied four separate times to bring the Blades and the Admirals into OT, where the Admirals ended it 5-4. The Everblades are back home on Wednesday.
