Tips for sticking to your holiday budget

Santa’s not the only one who should be making a list and checking it twice. Holiday budgets are something everyone should make and stick to.

This year, NerdWallet expects consumers to spend more than last.

But no matter how much or how little you plan to spend, staying away from debt in the new year is important.

First, make a list of who you need to buy for and the dollar amount for each person.

Next, keep that list on you at all times to avoid overbuying.

Also, track your spending.

If you own a smartphone, use it to your advantage. Keep an active list in your notes, or on a shared document.

This will also help you monitor prices.

Gifts are not the only thing you should include in your budget. Factor in hosting, travel home decor and small party gifts.
