Another suspicious fire in Port Charlotte under investigation

Published: Updated:

Officials are investigating two separate fires that burned overnight.

Around 4:30 a.m., emergency services were called to an abandoned building on Lorette Avenue to address a fire that reignited, according to the Charlotte County Sheriff’s office.

The fire department successfully put out a fire in the same location hours earlier.

“It’s still under investigation whether it possibly rekindled,” said Katie Heck of the sheriff’s office. “The fire department is fairly confident that’s not what happened. We are looking at the possibility that it was restarted.”

Another fire burned about two miles from the abandoned house at 10:30 p.m. A third site nearby showed signs of an attempted fire, Heck said.

“In all three cases the smell of gasoline is present, so they are being investigated as arson,” Heck said.

Officials are currently working through news tips to release suspect information.
