Children 12 years and younger will not be able to visit patients in portions of area hospitals, according to a statement from Lee Health.

The restriction stems from an increase in cases, increasing by 65 percent in one week with 330 patients coming down with the flu, Lee Health said. Kids will be prohibited from visiting patients in the Intensive Care Units, Pediatric Intensive Care Units and Hematology and Oncology units.

The restrictions do not include the Trauma ICU at Lee Memorial Hospital.

Lee Health urges county residents to take the following precautions during flu season:

  • Get the flu vaccine, as well as the pneumococcal vaccine
  • Practice good hand by washing hands often
  • Stay home when you are ill
  • Cover your cough and dispose of tissues in a waste receptacle

The health system advises, if you experience flu-like symptoms, visit a Lee Health Convenient Care, walk-in or urgent care center.
