FORT MYERS, Fla. A 7-year-old girl returned home from school battered and bruised last week, according to the Fort Myers Police Department.

The Unity Charter School of Fort Myers student told her mother, Abby Bell, she was hit repeatedly in the face and body on Oct. 11 by a classmate on the bus.

“As a mom what am I suppose to do? I trust these people to send my kids to school to be safe and I cant even feel that way anymore,” Bell said.

The school principle George Coates told WINK News the student responsible is being punished, but he could not elaborate.

“I’m not able to share anything, anything in regards to discipline about any other student because all their rights are protected,” Coates said.

A similar incident was reported Monday at Edison Park Elementary School on 2401 Euclid Avenue, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.

An 11-year-old student was punched on the bus after school, deputies said. The case remains under investigation.

Approximately 26 reports of crime, violence or disruptive behavior take place every day at schools statewide, according to the Department of Education.
