CAPE CORAL, Fla. Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott is passing over a former deputy for his endorsement in the Cape Coral mayoral race.

Mike Hollow, who retired as a Lieutenant with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office in 2016, is facing business man Joe Coviello in the November general election.

“I transferred him [Hollow] per his request and then he retired…I found it all a bit odd. That said, I have come to have serious doubts as to Mike’s overall motives and loyalties,” Scott said in a statement.

Scott sought to dispel the notion, citing a partial statement shared on social media, that he endorsed Hollow earlier in the race.

The sheriff said he intended to stay neutral and initially declined to endorse anyone.

Scott ultimately felt compelled to endorse Coviello because he “is in this race for all the right reasons and has the City’s best interests at heart,” Scott said.

“I wholeheartedly support his candidacy and endorse him for Mayor,” Scott said.
