Hurricane Irma weakens to Category 1 storm

FORT MYERS, Fla. Hurricane Irma weakened to a Category 1 storm Monday morning as it moved over the western Florida peninsula, the National Hurricane Center said.

The storm has maximum sustained winds of 85 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center. The system is moving north-northwest at 15 mph. The storm is about 20 miles northwest of Lakeland, and 25 miles northeast of Tampa.

A Storm Surge Warning is in effect for the South Santee River southward to Jupiter Inlet, North Miami Beach southward –around the Florida peninsula to the Ochlockonee River, the Florida Keys, and Tampa Bay, according to the National Hurricane Center said.

A Hurricane Warning is in effect for north of Jupiter Inlet to Fernandina Beach, north of Bonita Beach to Indian Pass and Lake Okeechobee, the National Hurricane Center said.

A Hurricane Watch is in effect for north of Fernandina Beach to Edisto Beach, according to the National Hurricane Center.

A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Jupiter Inlet southward around the Florida peninsula to Bonita Beach, the Florida Keys, the Florida Bay, west of Indian Pass to the Okaloosa and Walton County Line, north of Fernandina Beach to the South Santee River, the National Hurricane Center said.

A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Bimini and Grand Bahama, according to the National Hurricane Center.
