Cape Coral siblings drown in pool

Published: Updated:

CAPE CORAL, Fla. Two children died Monday night after drowning in a swimming pool, the Cape Coral Police Department said.

The children, a 3-year-old boy and a 1-year-old girl, were taken to the Cape Coral Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

Their father, Eric Merchant Sr., had gone upstairs to use the bathroom at about 10:17 p.m., and when he returned, he saw his children motionless in the pool outside a condominium building on the 1000 block of Southwest 47th Terrace, a police report said.

Merchant ran out to the pool, pulled them out, and rushed to the parking lot to yell for help.

Another man came and tried to help. Officers arrived and performed CPR until paramedics showed up.

Merchant told police he doesn’t know how the children got into the pool.

The Department of Children and Families was contacted and an investigation is underway.

The names of the children were not released.
