FPL prepares for hurricane season with new technology

Published: Updated:

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. From simulated news coverage to weather maps, Florida Power and Light is doing everything they can to prepare for the upcoming hurricane season.

FPL is using drones, robots and smart meters that connect to a power grid to help prevent outages, as well as get customers’ power back on quicker when it does go out.

FPL President and CEO Eric Silagy said $150,000 service interruptions were prevented during hurricanes Hermine and Matthew last year because of the $3 billion invested in the grid since 2006.

“This is not about just FPL,” he said. “This is team Florida. This is doing what’s right for the state.”
