FORT MYERS, Fla. The Gateway community is one step closer to getting a new high school.

The Lee County school district’s site selection committee voted unanimously to build a new high school near Griffin Drive on Thursday.

A site in Alva at the corner of Joel Boulevard and Tuckahoe Road was also being considered.

Nearly two dozen people spoke at the meeting, including some future students. Several factors were addressed, such as student population and transportation.

The school district’s advisory council voted 39-12 in favor of building a new high school in the Gateway community in a meeting last month.

The school board will make the final decision in a meeting on June 6.
