CORAL GABLES, Fla. The FGCU baseball team defeated the University of Miami 5-4 Wednesday night at Mark Light Field.

This victory marked the first time in program history the Eagles claimed the season series against the Hurricanes, improving their record 5-2 in games against Florida, FSU and Miami this season.

The Hurricanes took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning with a single RBI to left field from Romy Gonzalez. Miami added another run to the scoreboard two innings later with an infield single from Johnny Ruiz, giving the Hurricanes a 2-0 lead.

However, the Eagles responded with a run of their own in the top of the sixth when junior Julio Gonzalez delivered a single RBI to center with two outs.

But the Hurricanes extended their lead 3-1 after Joe Gomez scored on a wild pitch.

The Eagles gained a 4-3 in the top of the seventh with another three runs before a rain delay. But the Hurricanes tied the game 4-4 in the bottom of the inning with a single to right field.

The Eagles took the lead again in the eighth when freshman Alex Brait hit an RBI single up the middle to score redshirt senior Corey Fehribach, sealing the win for the Green and Blue.

FGCU will return to Swanson Stadium this weekend to face USC Upstate in a three-game series. Game one is slated for Thursday at 6:30 p.m., followed by game two Friday at 6:30 and the series finale Saturday at noon.
